What counts as a “unit”?
A unit generally means one finished product sold that features the licensed pattern — e.g., one printed tote bag, one fabric yard, one digital download sold, etc.
What if I want minor changes to the art, colors, or file format?
Custom File Sizes & Format Adjustments
If you ever need a larger file format than what I typically provide, please reach out—I’ll gladly review your request. If I notice any technical issues, such as a seamless pattern not lining up correctly, I will fix those at no cost to you.
For custom requests such as resizing files, creating new colorways, or adjusting artwork, my hourly rate is $65. Turnaround time is usually 5–7 business days, and your project includes up to three proofs before final delivery (sent after online payment is received).
Because artwork starts with a physical canvas or paper, file sizes vary. Some pieces were originally scanned at very high resolutions (up to 10,000 pixels wide), which may allow for a simple adjustment. Others may require a complete re-scan at a higher resolution, along with additional editing—this can be a more significant process. Most files are typically 4,000 pixels wide or larger, but I’m happy to let you know what’s possible for your specific piece.
With over 20 years of design experience, I take pride in delivering high-quality work. Services may include:
-
Re-scanning files for higher resolution (most are already 300–600 dpi; higher can be arranged upon request).
-
Converting bitmap files to vector for infinite scalability.
-
Customizing colors to fit your project needs.
Minimum license fee explained:
To ensure fair compensation and protect the value of the artwork, all commercial licenses have a minimum upfront fee of $500, regardless of project size or complexity. This fee covers the artist’s time and skill and prevents underpricing.
The minimum fee is separate from royalties, which are a percentage of your sales.
For example, if your license has a $500 minimum fee plus 5% royalties, you pay $500 upfront. Then, if your sales reach $20,000, you owe an additional $1,000 in royalties (5% of $20,000). If sales are low, you still pay the $500 minimum.
Royalties:
-
Royalties Calculation
Royalties are calculated as a percentage of gross sales (total revenue before expenses) and are typically reported and paid quarterly or as agreed. -
Fair Partnership
This system allows you to invest less upfront while sharing in the ongoing success of your products. The more your products sell, the greater the value you receive — and I stay motivated to create fresh designs that keep your customers coming back. -
Custom Licensing Options
If exclusivity, customization, or multi-region rights are important to you, let’s talk. I enjoy crafting tailored licensing packages that fit your exact needs. -
Minimum Upfront Fee
The minimum upfront fee is the guaranteed base amount you pay to license the artwork. This fee does not count toward royalties and is payable regardless of sales. -
Royalties Are Additional
Royalties are additional payments calculated as a percentage of gross sales on top of the upfront fee. For example, if the minimum upfront fee is $500 and royalties are 5%, you pay $500 at the start, then 5% of your gross revenue in royalties as sales occur. -
Sales Impact on Fees
Even if sales are low, the minimum fee still applies. If sales are high, royalties increase your total payment beyond that minimum, ensuring fair compensation for both parties.
Do you have a non-royalty option?
Yes, I do charge a multiple of the standard upfront fee if you, the client, wants no royalties — often 2x to 4x the upfront fee is typical. This compensates for the risk and lost future income. Contact me for questions
Example:
-
Standard commercial license upfront fee = $1,000 + 6% royalties
-
Buyout (no royalties) upfront fee = $3,000 (3x standard fee) with no royalties due
Duration & Renewal:
License terms are fixed, but clients can renew by paying 75% of the original upfront fee before the license expires to continue usage for another year.
For example, if your original upfront fee was $1,200, renewing the license would cost $900 for an additional year.
Exclusivity:
Exclusive licenses prevent any other party from using the pattern in the agreed category and time frame. These are custom-priced based on scope. An exclusive license is typically for three years. Adjustments can be made to our contract if needed or desired.
Customizations & Add-ons:
Requests like color changes, size modifications, or multi-category use may increase licensing fees. Please contact us to discuss specifics.
International & Digital Rights:
The price tiers assume United States distribution unless otherwise specified. For digital-only or extended geography licenses, adjustments can be negotiated.
Sales Reporting & Transparency
To ensure accurate royalty payments and maintain a transparent partnership, licensees are expected to provide regular sales reports detailing the number of units sold and gross revenue generated from products featuring the licensed pattern. Typically, sales reports are submitted quarterly, but reporting frequency can be tailored based on agreement terms.
This standard practice allows me to verify royalty calculations, support your success, and continue delivering designs that resonate with your customers. Open communication and honest reporting help build trust and ensure a smooth licensing experience for both parties.
